Das Verzeichnis der Welterbe-Stätten will Kultur- und Naturstätten "mit herausragender universaler Bedeutung" identifizieren, schützen und erhalten. Die UNESCO hat 2008 die Heiligen Stätten der Bahá'í in Haifa und Bahji zum Weltkulturerbe ernannt. Der Schrein des Bab in Haifa sowie das Grabmal Bahá'u'lláhs in Bahji / Akka sind Pilgerziele von rund sieben Millionen Bahá'í weltweit. Der Schrein des Bab gilt als Wahrzeichen der Stadt Haifa. Seit ihrer Erweiterung Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts ziehen sich die kunstvoll terrassenförmig angelegten Bahá'í Gärten beinahe über die ganze Höhe des Berges Karmel. Das Welterbe-Verzeichnis enthält auch andere religiöse Stätten mit internationaler Bedeutung wie den Vatikan, die Altstadt von Jerusalem und die Ruine der vor kurzem zerstörten buddhistischen Bamiyan Statuen in Afghanistan. Die Bahá'í - Schreine sind jedoch die ersten Stätten mit einer religiösen Tradition, die in der Neuzeit entstanden sind und in das UNESCO-Verzeichnis aufgenommen wurden.Der Informationsabend über die UNESCO-Welterbe-Konvention, das Welterbe der Bahá'í in Haifa und der Religionsgemeinschaft der Bahá'í findet am kommenden Montag, 08. Juni im Gobelinsaal des "Alten Rathaus" in Bonn statt. Beginn ist um 19:00 Uhr.
